Established in 1961 and reconstituted by the Employees Compensation Act 2010, NSITF administers social protection for workers across the private and public sectors.

NSITF is the sole administrator of the Employees Compensation Scheme in Nigeria. The scheme provides an open, fair and no-fault system of guaranteed compensation for every employee — or their dependants — for any death, injury, disease or disability arising out of or in the course of employment.
Beyond compensation, the Fund invests in workplace safety research, employer capacity-building and public awareness — because prevention is the most powerful form of protection.

- 11961Founded as NPF
Established as the National Provident Fund to provide a compulsory-savings poverty-alleviation scheme for private-sector workers, per ILO Convention No. 102.
- 21993Becomes NSITF
Reconstituted as the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund with a broader social-insurance mandate, following a Federal Government review of the NPF's performance.
- 32010ECA enacted
The Employees' Compensation Act 2010 makes NSITF the sole administrator of the Employees' Compensation Scheme.
